There various XY designs nowadays. Which one is the best in terms of a precision, repeatability, rigidity and speed?

1. CoreXY with crossing - A
2. CoreXY no crossing - B
3. CoreXY - C, http://forums.reprap.org/read.php?397,706869
4. CoreXE
5. Ultimaker - carthesian, crossing axes
6. H-bot
7. Markforged - Markforged Mark design
8. Sli3DR - http://richrap.blogspot.com/search/label/Sli3DR
9. Dualwire Gantry - http://reprap.org/wiki/Dualwire-Gantry_(DW-G)
10. Carthesian (1S1M) - one side driven by one motor
11. Carthesian (2S2M) - two sides driven by two motors (electrically coupled)
12. Carthesian (1S1M) - two sides driven by one motor (mechanically coupled)

slight bulge at corners (3 replies)

If I print a square profile, each corner has a slight bulge due to too much filament being extruded. I think this happens at the instant of change direction when the nozzle is at a standstill.
I have tried various tweaks in simplify3d but have been unable to eradicate this anomaly
I wonder if a firmware tweak could solve this.

I have a coreXY machine that is build with MGN12 Chinese Rails.
I have been having issues with alot of sound / resonance during printing.

I added some Nema 17 Dampeners and it really decreased substancially.. its not all gone but a big improvement.
I suggest anyone with weird vibration/ resonance sound issues to install a pair on your XY steppers

Is there any way to extend the CoreXY architecture so as to have 3 stationary motors controlling the XY positions of 2 print heads, where the Y positions are constrained to be the same?

Help on CoreXY build (1 reply)

Hi everyone,

After building a crane style bot (with V-slot), now building a Core-XY with linear rods. Build size 100*100*100mm.

I am facing some issues when homing and while printing.

In the image 'Corexy.jpg[attachment 85207 Corexy.jpg]', the left side motor is connected to X motor connection in RAMPS, right side motor is connected to Y motor in RAMPS, left side endstop in X-carriage is connected to X-min endstop in RAMPS, backside endstop is connected to Y-min endstop in RAMPS.

When the X-carriage is at the front side (away from the motors), the X homing is done properly. The hot end moves to the left side and hits the endstop smoothly. (Refer '[attachment 85208 HomeXatback.3gp]')

Also Y homing is also done properly with the same condition (X-carriage is at the front side, away from the motors). X-carriage moves to the back side and hits the back endstop smoothly.

Now the problem arises when the X-carriage is at the back side (near by the XY motors). When I click 'X home', it is moving towards the X endstop, but not triggering it, stoping before the endstop.

And the same, when the X-carriage is at the back side, and when I click 'Y home, the hot end is moving strangely and not at all homing Y. (Refer [attachment 85209 Xhomingnotdoneproperly.3gp]', [attachment 85211 Yhomeactingstrange.3gp]').

I tried with motor wires swapping, X Y motors swapping, endstop swapping and tried with true and false values in Marlin also. ([attachment 85214 Configuration.h] file attached.)

Also, after homing, if I move, Y axis by 90mm, X carriage is also moving along with Y. (Refer '[attachment 85212 Xmoving90mm.3gp]', '[attachment 85213 Ymoving90mm1.3gp]')

Same, when I move X axis by some value, Y is also moving with X carriage. Is it the normal property of Core-XY.

I am using Arduino+RAMPS with Marlin RC7. Using original E3d Lite6, MK8 extruder. I have attached the images, videos and config file also.

Also, I just printed a 20mm cube without filament. Instead of square movements, the printer is moving in parallelogram motion. (Looking like 15 degree inclined).

And how to get perfect tension with CoreXY. When I tighten the belt in the hot end mount, the mount gets inclined (X-carriage not perpendicular to Y-axis). But when I did the normal tight, X and Y are perpendicular.

Help me to proceed further.

Thanks & Regards
Selva

Anyone can comfirm a 9mm pulley dimension? (7 replies)

I ask here cause its problably where must of those idler/pulley are used.

Im looking at robotdigg 9mm idler smooth (brass one) and toothed link and cannot find the right dimension. They said they use 695 bearing (13mm OD) in them, its impossible for the toothed (20 tooth = 12.10mm) so this must be for the smooth one but they have very limited dimension info.

Anyone have them and can comfirm the OD of the smooth one where the belt sit and the height of both toothed and smooth?

I write a email to them asking the right dimension but since they know for not answering must of the time I try to double my chance asking here too just in case.

I guess im force to take a break into designing the printer then, without those info its kinda hard to plan the alignment or bracket dimension to fit them.

I've finally got my printer rdoing motion tests but I've run into an issue. When I home the x or y the gantry only moves front to back and its super slow and choppy about it. I must have done something wrong, I'm running a ramps/Mega combo with repetier (set for corexy). I have pictures and video of the setup and it moving but but the site won't let me upload. any idea of what I could have done wrong?

I build my very first machine - corexy 3D printer but still in progress (1 reply)

Hi, I am a Malaysian chinese, I know about 3D printer 5 years ago, at the time 3D printer was super amazing to me.I really want to build my own 3D printer, but that time i was young, I have insufficient knowledge, skill and tools. I can only keep my dream deep inside my heart.
After I start to work, I learn I gain my experience, finally I have the ability to build my very first machine in my life.
Of course, when we said about build, a starter should be a concept, research, availability, idea, design, drawing and build. My concept is high speed printing, good accuracy, stable, silent. Long life service, safe, handsome, able to print some storng material like abs, nylon, pom.
So I had used core xy design for my build. I choose ultumaker 1.5.7 as my motherboard, MK8 extruder, 100w servo motor x2 , H57 stepper motor, full metal structures, heater in enclosure environment with double layer plate so outside of the printer is cool to touch. Build size around xyz 260 x 260 x 300mm, inductive sensor attached for auto bed level features. 10mm 6061 aluminium print bed with 600w heater attached.
Actually, a lot of part I get it with FOC, remove from old machine, save me a lot of money. I have used cheap chinese linear bearing LM12UU with cage, around 1USD each. The problem come after I complete the machine I realized the cheap bearing has a lot free play and make a lot knocking noise when accelerating stop. I decided change to better Japanese NSK linear bearing and new linear rod. (the liner rod is pull from old machine), some safety components like thermal fuse, ELCB.
I will upload some photo later...

How to reduce noise on my G&C CoreXY? (8 replies)

My G&C CoreXY printer has always been a little noisy, but since fitting a direct extruder and its stepper motor to the carriage, the noise has become more obvious. I think the increased carriage mass has affected everything, resulting in a lot more resonance and buzzing. I have been making some parts for this printer on my Prusa i3 and the difference in noise levels is very noticeable!

If I move the carriage by direct commands at any speed it's fairly quiet, but it's far noisier when printing. Any move that involves both X-Y motors - e.g. a straight line in only the X or Y direction - results in quite a bit more noise. The noise when printing circles is especially loud and annoying. It's as if the 2 motors are resonating with each other, or interacting in some way.

All fasteners are tight, and the belts have enough tension to 'bong' when plucked - it think the belt tensions are equal, as far as I can tell.

So now I'm looking for some help and guidance:

1. Can anyone suggest some diagnostics to help narrow down the cause of this noise?

2. Can anyone suggest some solutions? People have spoken in the past about using 0.9 degree steppers instead of 1.8 degree ones - would this help? And is changing over simply a case of swapping the X-Y motors and doubling their steps per millimetre values?

3. Are there any changes I could make to the configuration of my Duet 0.6 board to reduce noise? I have attached a copy of my config.g file, if that helps (ignore the 'M92 E600' line - this file was copied from my backup - it's now 'M92 E102').

Also, I said above that my drive belts are tight - could I have them too tight? When I first built the printer I used those rubber mountings to reduce vibration, but the belts pulled the motors over at an angle, so I had to remove them and use the thin cork dampers. How can I tell whether the belts have the proper tension?

All helpful suggestions appreciated!

Marlin won't move Z axis (5 replies)

Hello everyone! I'm working on the final parts of my custom 3d printer, and I ran into an issue with the Z axis. I am able to home the z axis and fine tune it from the Full Graphic Controller, but the z axis does not move during prints. I have verified this by watching the lead screw and the software control as well.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Setting up Core XY and Duet Wifi (3 replies)

I've been working hard at setting up my printer and had it working a few days ago,but prints were inverted. The harder I have tried to remedy this, the further I get away from a solution. I have the correct motor movements i.e. G1 S2 X10 moves X to the right and and Y towards the back( forward). G1 S2 Y10 Moves X to left and Y towards the back. Right now, I can't get X or Y to go to an endstop w/ my homing files and quite frankly, I've become quite confused as to what's going on.My Y endstop is in the rear, but I want to home to front left Some please take a look at my files. Thanks.

Here is something i designed that is based on dnewman/jetguy triple leadscrew builds, im based in europe so sourcing parts was a little more expensive that thought everything cost about ~1800 eu not including shipping
2040 aluminum extrusion frame from ratrig
Running it on a mightyboard with sailfish firmware, MGN 12 rails everywhere(stainless steel from robotdigg for XY gantry, very happy with them), laser cut 5 mm alu parts.
Carl Raffle Tecto hot end and microswiss stainless steel nozzle (going to be used mostly for printing abrasive materials)

The only thing left to do is connect the silicone heater that im planning to run through an SSR (dc-dc 25A) will post more photos soon when i get that done and will upload a video of maiden print tomorrow ,will post CAD files aswell.

I ended up using as much metal bracing as possible instead of the 3d printed parts (All printed parts were made with PETG). Also, I replaced the z axis wheel mounts with OpenBuilds aluminum plates / eccentric spacers and it's super stable now. Still waiting for my aluminum plate / silicone heating pad to come in the mail, but I've done some test (no filament) prints and everything looks to be running well. I did notice a lot of vibration in vertical extrusion near the x/ y motors (due to how tall I made it). I added some 45 degree bracing on the sides and it removed most of the vibration.

I hope to be printing in PLA (no heater) this weekend!

Are the two different masses of the XCarriage and whole Y+X gantries for the other mass a real issue? (5 replies)

Hi guys, i've heard that with corexy the two different masses that have to be moved, XCarriage in X direction and whole Y+X gantries for Y direction could be an issue. Is that true? I can't seem to be able to wrap my head around it. Each motor in corexy, when moving, will move both masses so there is no differentiation in torque needed or anything else. I could be wrong though so I want some feedback from community here. Thanks.

HELP!!! Nothing will upload to Mega 2560 (2 replies)

So I've had a pretty good time uploading firmware to the arduino so far but today when I was planning on changing the steps per mm on the extruder, I never got that far cause I could never upload. Here is the error arduino gave me:

avrdude: stk500v2_ReceiveMessage(): timeout
avrdude: ser_send(): write error: sorry no info avail
avrdude: stk500_send(): failed to send command to serial port
avrdude: ser_recv(): read error: The handle is invalid.

So I need to know why my laptop won't recognize the Arduino.
I've scoured the internet for answers, but didn't find anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone!

Could you guys give me your opinions on these motors?

They are 5 volt motors, will they work with these electronics?

I'm building a corexy machine. The motors seem like a pretty good deal.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Full Graphic Smart Controller screen flickering (1 reply)

The green lights are on on the Arduino, but the green light on the Ramps is flickering constantly. I have reset and re-uploaded the firmware, but still getting the same results. Does anyone know what would cause the screen to flicker like this? The light on the RAMPS seem to flicker at the same frequency. I was having a few endstop short circuits recently (may be the problem). I have those chinsy 3-wire endstops that short circuit if you plug them in the wrong way.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

This is my first time designing and building a custom corexy printer with Ramps 1.4 and Arduino mega. I just finished wireing and did my first test print, It seems to move to the right on the x axis when it is supposed to be moving down on the z axis. I'v uploaded a video to show the issue on YouTube. Any advice would be great. Here is the link to the video.
